Torqeedo I received my 1003 and I have tried directly on Schedule AX2.
Why an outboard?
I bought an outboard for in July in August, the port of Cavalaire leave us out, some seem to have rights to the rental place that we have not yet ... Hopefully the port installs a fleet of buoys anchorage where we come again to rent an office for the summer. Phew!
But buoys are small units furthest from the port, about 1 / 2 nautical mile. To have tried, this distance is gigantic train set, especially when the wind refuses! The beach nearest is hardly a better solution because if the access channels are reserved for boats .. engine and prohibited the train! If you're rowing, you should go in the only channel of access that you have registered but who is 0.3 nautical miles from the anchorage area! Recommended!
Moreover, it is impossible to leave the annex on the beach without risking it being vandalized (I speak knowingly!), We must deflate and carry.
That means going to the beach by car ... which is anything but easy in July / August, because parking is scarce.
The plan of the beach of Cavalaire + my lack of piston pushes me to the captaincy then use an outboard.
The advantage is to be able to leave the annex to the port (they say that there has never been theft problems ..), it is easier to park and I could go there by scooter or bus.
But what outboard choose?
- A Thermal Honda 2.5 hp, 18-20 kg for 800 €
- An electric Minkotta: 2CV about 8 Kg 800 + € 380 Ah AGM battery separate 11 kg € 150, autonomy unknown, more consistent battery 20kg recommended.
- An Electric Torqeedo: 3HP 8 kg + 4 kg for integrated removable battery of 400 Wh for 1700 €
The choice is not simple.
The electric has two disadvantages: the autonomy much smaller than the thermal and its price but it has many advantages:
- No maintenance other than rinsing from time to time,
- Less risk of failure or not at all
- No difficulty stokage (no bad odors inside the boat),
- A weight range, the engine is only 8 kg (it should still think of the battery)
- A noise much lower than that of a prime mover
So, obviously, the prices are justified, but how savor if the price increase is for increased comfort ... not found the answer, I took a year to decide. What makes the prize pool available in the meantime has increased which has allowed me to indulge in the cream of the electric motor for dinghy: the Torqeedo T1003S.
This is the subject of the battery that made me renounced kotta min. Basically the min kotta were designed for fishing in fresh water, use it in boats larger than a schedule that can easily accommodate 60 kg and above conventional battery lead. This gives them enough autonomy to their fishing trip. The desire of the fishermen is more able to move silently as far. In terms of optimization hyrdodynamqie, it was highly likely that minkotta have reduced returns.

However, Torqeedo is a trade mark, has clearly placed the focus on autonomy, and they released their own batteries, lithium-ion battery that weighs only 4 kg and 400 Wh show very attractive yields from 8am autonomy to 1.5 or 2 knots
Torqeedo also produces models Travel 401 Travel 801 and T503, which could be interesting for this type of use. The 401 and 801 (respectively equivalent to 1 hp and 2) are the old range, I find them more beautiful .. they have the advantage of being able to store in a bag for the tree bends, impressive, but not so useful as that.
Their failure to use, has come to corrosion that appears at the connection between different elements, we must be careful not to overexpose the engine and flush automatically.
The T503 and T1003 (respectively equivalent to 1.5 and 3HP) are completely waterproof, thanks to an improved connectivity and a hull. Each piece is supposed to withstand 1h 1m deep.
The look it feels a bit .. But the T1003 offers a max 3HP, which is more than enough for an annex, and lets consider the idea interesting can be used as engine Thermal relief if the main Clico was, once again, to take its toll on arrival in port.
Above all, the T1003 is the only one with a two-bladed propeller, instead of bladed for his colleagues, which is a big advantage for the storage engine. Whether on the back porch or stored inside the boat or the trunk of the car, certainly better than a double blade passes a three-bladed and is always at odds and the risk of breaking.
According to the doc technique, the choice of two blade is permitted by the additional power, requires a minimum power for a two-blade does not represent a loss of performance.
Another advantage of 1003 (and also 503), you have a GPS which was coupled to consumption of instant information and the remaining charge in battery gives you your speed and the instantaneous calculation of the distance possible.
Anyway, here's how you spend € 1,729 for a single outboard!
Testing the Torqeedo 1003 S
After initial testing, a lot of fun in port, and then went back on a mooring area with a wind that was well be blown its 15-20 knots, the result is very satisfactory.
The test conditions were not theoretical, as all data constructor that can be found but more realistic about the use that we can have in practice.
After making silly faces in our failure, reverse, forward, back, slowly, etc. .. I picked Stephanie for a roundtrip to the anchorage area.
I am having fun 1 quart an hour and had used only 2% of the battery.
I have noticed that the bottom (almost because the nose of the Annex rose really) that I stalled at about 4 knots, my max distance remaining to be traveled was estimated at only 2 miles and I was taking 10 times more than a more reasonable speed.
Around 2 knots, my remaining distance to travel easily climbed 15/18 miles. I was well sheltered from the wind when I found these figures.
At two in the appendix, I have not seen any noticeable difference.
Once outside the harbor, the wind was pushing us towards the anchorage area, innévitablement, displaying the distance began to increase 20, then 25 nautical I even reduced the speed of a node to find a 40 nautical miles .. With a 55 watt displayed consomation we were going blithely to 2 knots. is derived on that, we just go away without eating ..
To do this half nautical mile in these conditions, I used about 6% of the battery.
Obviously, the return, the wind was from the front, and the situation more interesting. The speed dropped to 1.2 knots, I had to raise the towers and consume 110 watt hours to find my 2 nodes .. logically what I actually used an additional 12% of the battery.
Conclusion, one went back (away from wind and the wind, force 4) 1 mile total (2 * 0.5) at a speed of 2 knots, is consuming 18% of the battery, which allows to consider many scenarios ballads and anchorages possible (I do not normally anchored 0.5 miles from the beach!
